The Genesee River is the lifeline of Rochester and was also a lifeline of the Iroquois people who lived in our region long before the city was established on the high falls of the river in the early s.

The Genesee is special and important. From its source atop a hill in Potter County, Pennsylvania to its end at Lake Ontario within the City of Rochester, the Genesee River flows miles north and drops. The Genesee River starts as a spring on a farm in Gold PA, which is in the Allegheny Mountains.

It runs (and falls) through countryside, towns and small villages until it gets to Rochester where it slashes out into Lake Ontario. The entire run is about miles and the total drop in elevation is about feet. Get this from a library. A comprehensive development plan for the Genesee River in Rochester.

One of the few rivers in the United States running south to north, the Genesee River was the result of the last great ice sheet that covered New York roug years ago.

The Seneca Nation fished and hunted along the river, important to New York since the beginnings of time. In the early s, it served as a source of waterpower for numerous industries. But it's pretty good for a waterfall right in the middle of a city. The mighty Genesee was harnessed to power waterwheels early in the 19th cent.
